This is particularly helpful when you are new to organic skin care and want to find out what works best for you without breaking the bank. Applying unprocessed, whole-food ingredients onto your skin — being in control of what goes on and in your body — will make you love your skin, even if you are someone who has struggled with skin problems in the past. This is a time for you to take charge of your skin and health.
Let’s start with some of the most basic ingredients that you may even already have in your kitchen, it’s ok to share, really, if you eat why not wear it?
1. Coconut Oil
One of the handiest skin ingredients there is, coconut oil’s benefits to your skin can include: strengthening underlying epidermal tissue, removing dead skin cells. eww, and containing antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and antioxidant properties.
Use coconut oil on both your skin and hair to help cleanse, moisturize, remove makeup. I personally use coconut oil as a moisturizer and about 3 times a week I use it in my hair. I drench my hair and scalp with coconut oil and leave it in for about 15 to 20 minutes, usually while I am giving myself a facial as well. Then I jump in the shower and shampoo and condition as normal. Let’s talk about gut health, just for a second, coconut oil is great for nourishing your gut and immune system.
2. Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil has been used for hundreds of years to fight breakouts, redness, and inflammation on the skin. I use it as a conditioner on my hair. Many people can react harshly to prescribed or over the counter acne treatment, tea tree oil is usually well-tolerated and comes with few, if any, of the side effects when combined with a carrier oil and applied directly to the skin. Tea tree oil uses include working as a natural anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antimicrobial and anti-fungal – it is one of the most versatile and popular natural skin care essential oils there is.
3. Apple Cider Vinegar
Let’s not only work on our outside but on the inside as well. Keeping the inside healthy can do a lot for keeping the outside healthy. An extremely inexpensive natural skin care product, apple cider vinegar has the benefits of helping to kill pathogens (bad stuff), clearing skin problems caused by gut issues, cleansing the skin and helping to stop acne, plus providing antifungal properties.
4. Raw Honey
Raw honey is one of the best and tastiest natural sources of nutrients, enzymes, vitamins, and skin-boosting acids. Benefits of raw honey include reducing breakouts, providing moisturizing properties, containing antiseptic qualities, encouraging wound healing, fighting allergies or rashes, and helping to reduce scars. I mix raw honey with hot water and lemon when I have a sore throat coming on and want to sooth it. Raw honey, not most store-bought honey as it is processed, is able to keep all of its nutrients intact as they’re not destroyed by processing.
Honey also makes a great homemade natural skin care product as an acne cure because it can be used in facial cleansers even on sensitive or mixed skin types.
5. Sea Salt
Sea salt comes loaded with tons of minerals and nutrients like magnesium, calcium, sodium, and potassium that it absorbs from the sea water where its produced. Many of these minerals are the same ones found in our skin cells and within our bodies, salt contains anti-inflammatory properties to soothe skin and calm breakouts, remove dead skin cells and irritation, balance oil production, and help the skin retain moisture levels.
Use real Himalayan or Celtic sea salts in homemade facial masks, toners and scrubs with other skin-boosting ingredients like coconut oil ( we’ve already covered this ingredient, see multiple uses and ideas), lavender essential oil and raw honey (ahhh look another use for honey, multi-use means more savings).
Here is another money saving yet totally beneficial and organic how-to for you: make your own homemade scrub by mixing two teaspoons sea salt with four teaspoons raw honey, then apply the mix evenly to clean skin, rub it gently, let it stand for 15 minutes and rinse.
An ultra-moisturizing fatty fruit, not only are they yummy on toast, as guacamole, or cut onto my eggs and bagels, etc., the benefits of avocados when used topically can include containing vitamins A, D, and E that penetrate the skin. It helps soothe sunburned skin, can boost collagen production and treat age spots. It also works to reduce inflammation of the skin when applies topically and can do the same internally when eaten.
7. Argan Oil
Argan oil is so healing because it’s rich in vitamin A and vitamin E, various antioxidants, omega-6 fatty acids, and linoleic acid. Argan is not only great for gently moisturizing skin, but it also boosts the shine and health of your hair. Yup, I use this as a conditioner as well. I do rotate my conditioners, tee tree oil, and argan oil. I usually leave my shampoo the same, argan oil, and I don’t wash my hair every day, usually every other day.
9. Aloe Vera
I bet the first thing you thought of was the aloe vera benefits with healing sunburns, but did you know that aloe also contains bacteria-fighting, soothing ingredients that fight inflammation, redness and itching? Aloe has been used to treat skin diseases, infections and as a natural treatment for fungal diseases.
10. Jojoba Oil
Jojoba oil is extremely moisturizing and can help heal burns, sores, scars, dermatitis, acne psoriasis and wrinkles. This oil has been used to treat acne, psoriasis, sunburn and chapped skin for generations. It’s also used to reduce balding because it encourages hair regrowth, soothes the skin and unclogs hair follicles.
11. Almond Oil (unless you’re allergic!!!!!)
You probably already know about the many tasty nutritional benefits of almonds, but maybe not so aware of the benefits of using almond oil on your skin. Almond oil not only smells great, but it has anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, and antiseptic properties. It makes a great carrier oil for essential oils to naturally treat skin rashes, acne or dryness. It also blends well with various different smells, so you should try it in homemade washes, masks or lotions.
12. Shea Butter
It makes an excellent moisturizing option for dry skin types and is inexpensive yet effective at reducing flaking, redness or peeling.
Try it in a Homemade Skin Care Butter mixed with your favorite essential oils like frankincense, eucalyptus or bergamot oil or with lavender oil and mint in my homemade lip balm.
13. Castor Oil
Used to cleanse skin, castor oil is actually a “drying oil,” even though that might seem counterintuitive. For facial cleansing, you only need to use a very small amount, about a teaspoon of castor oil, mixed into in 1/4 cup of another oil like coconut or almond. Rub into your face and massage, then rinse with warm water to carry away impurities.
Let’s whip up some beauty
I’ve learned to make many of my own skin care products. It’s easy with products you already have in your bathroom and pantry, especially if you have any of the above-mentioned products. But just because something is homemade doesn’t mean we can ignore some very important safety and health precautions such as:
1. Choose the Right Homemade Skincare Formula
The first step in developing a homemade skin care product is to find a suitable formula – one which not only nourishes the skin but also remains safe and stable while you’re using it. When choosing a formula, your choice should take into consideration not only the ingredients but also how they interact with each other.
It’s not easy to find reputable recipes for homemade skin care, as there are many blogs that contain dangerous recipes. I would recommend checking out some of these recipes:
2. Add a Natural Preservative System
But wait, I thought we were avoiding preservatives and all that bad stuff, well preservatives are ingredients that are added to a formulation to avoid microbial growth and to prolong the shelf life of a product. So if you plan on using your homemade product for a while listen up, if you are going to go through your store of product quickly, well maybe you don’t have to add preservatives.
Most cosmetic products have preservatives added to them. The majority of water-containing products and even some formulations that don’t contain water or water-loving ingredients should include a preservative system to guard against contamination from yeast, mold and bacteria. When your formula contains water, it provides the ideal conditions for bacterial and fungal growth.
Just ask yourself this question: Is there water in your formulation? Is it likely that water will be introduced into your homemade skincare product during its use? Then add a preservative system!
Natural preservatives are easy to find and we recommend that you always follow manufacturers’ and suppliers’ usage instructions to ensure your preservative is active and working as expected in your product.
3. Choose the Correct Container
Let’s look great with our homemade skin care products and part of the looking great is making sure our homemade products are going to work, part of ensuring the effectiveness is the packaging, what really? The right container can help keep your hard work stable for longer. In fact, it’s important to store your homemade skincare in proper and hygienic containers. But lucky for us all there are many retailers online that can help with that, just do your research, and then make sure it’s pretty too!
4. Produce the Right Amount
Since we want to be safe and effective with our homemade skin care, less may be more. It can be difficult to know the expiration of homemade products, so let’s be safe. If you are making something that you know you use daily and/or in larger amounts, it may be ok to make bigger batches, but remember we are trying to beautify and save money; we don’t want to throw out products because it may be expired or we aren’t sure. Smaller batches means your cream, balm or butter will be the very freshest it can be, but you’ll also get to play around with different ingredients regularly to whip up a fresh batch.
5. Measure your Ingredients Correctly
You must measure your ingredients, both liquids and solids, by weight using a digital scale. Measurement in weight is the most accurate method and will allow you to have the right balance of ingredients in your formulation. Write down your formula, and work with percentages so you can reproduce your batch or scale it to larger amounts.
6. Follow Usage Recommendations
One of the main reasons why people create homemade cosmetic products is that they want to know what is inside their beauty products. When making your own cosmetics, some ingredients such as certain carrier oils can be used at 100 per cent concentration. Many other ingredients have strict dosage recommendations, you must follow their recommended usage levels in order to be safe and effective.
Essential oils and natural preservatives are among those ingredients that may cause sensitization in some people and it is VERY IMPORTANT that you follow the supplier or manufacturer recommended usage limits in order to make safe cosmetic products.
In the end, it’s all about what works for you, and saves you money
I was raised like many of you were, loving those flowery romantic sexy smelly body splashes. I used face washes that said acne clearing, blackhead free or clear beautiful skin, and they temporarily made me feel beautiful.
Luckily, over the years as I became aware of the gimmicks and the hype, I realized I was poisoning my body from the inside out. I found my way to natural/organic products that were made with less harmful ingredients (or none at all!), and not only did my skin look and feel better, so did I. I was hooked once I learned about how much better natural products were for not only my body and the environment, but that they actually worked.
After a few years of hippie-fying my skincare goods, I felt great, saved money, and ultimately simplified my skincare regimen without compromising quality.
