7 Reasons to Make Your Own Skincare Products
I, like so many who lead this lifestyle, have converted to making many of my own skincare products. It was through trial and error and internet searching that I have figured out what works for me and what I like. If you are new to organic/natural skincare and are just unsure about what to do or how to do it than you have come to the right place. I am going to give you some reasons to put aside those fears and give DIY skincare a try. Now to caveat that, I do want you to do your research and understand that there are safe ways to make your own skincare products, I will go into that in another post.
Here are some very good reasons why you should give making your very own skin care products a try:
1 – Trust-Who else do you trust more than yourself?
Do you really want to put your faith in a product that you can’t even pronounce half of its ingredients? I think NOT! So much better to know exactly what is in your skincare!
You can’t always trust products marketed as ‘natural’ or ‘organic,’ unless it has the USDA certified organic label, and then you may have to pay more for the product. Remember from my previous post Does organic/natural skincare fit into your lifestyle? Products that say “Made with Organic Ingredients” must have at least 70 percent organic ingredients, but they will not have the USDA seal. Some companies may use a combination of natural and synthetic ingredients, but if they contain less than 70 percent they can only include organic ingredients in the list of ingredients, not as a label.
2 – Cost
The USDA Organic seal may come with an increase in the price tag, but the price can be associated with a higher quality product that is, therefore, healthier than the cheaper alternatives. The application and fees for obtaining a USDA Organic seal can cost up to $1500 and beauty brands have to register each additional product they want to display the seal with additional cost.
If you decide to make the leap to making your own products or at least some of your products, you won’t have to pay these business expenses. All you need to pay for are the ingredients you use, and most of them you may already have in your kitchen or pantry, and something to package the product in. Are you ready to save money now? A high-quality face cream that can retail for $30 or $40 you can easily make for $5-$10. (Creams are typically 60-70% water so this is one of the reasons they can be inexpensive to make!)
3 – Let’s Make it a Party
Making products from scratch is extremely satisfying. And you can even make it a party, invite some friends over and make it a girl’s day. Not only is this fun, but you can share ideas and laughs.
4 – Is This the Product for You-Then Make it So
When it comes to products that you can buy, there are products for dry skin, oily skin, combination skin, sensitive skin, “normal” skin, aging skin, and young acne-prone skin, can you see where this can be confusing? If you’re like me, I am not cookie cutter and don’t want to be. I am a firm believer of “there is no such thing as one size fits all.” When you make your own skincare, you can obtain much better benefits and pleasure. Not to mention you personalize your own product and get the results you are looking for i.e., Fragrance, skin type, acne prone, wrinkle reducer, sensitive skin, etc. Not to mention the benefits you will reap from the essential oils you choose. Not only do they smell good, but they have the ability to enter the body into your blood and help your body heal from the inside out.
5– Become empowered
When you can take care of yourself and your family it gives you a sense of empowerment. As they say, knowledge is power! Most products are simple to make and don’t require extra schooling or reading loads of box. There are some simple things you will need to learn such as how to formulate some products or when or if a preservative may need to be added, but trust me, you can pick this up easily and still make wonderful products for yourself and your family.
6 – Be Clever Be Resourceful
Say you found a product that you really like and you cringe every time you look at the price sticker. There is a simple solution to this dilemma, do some research into the ingredients and then go home and recreate something similar yourself. I guarantee you will be amazed at how much you will save by recreating that product at home.
7 – You can Find a Money-Making Machine!
So, once you become proficient and comfortable and are having a blast making your own products, who’s to stop you from making a bit of cash from selling what you’ve learned. You can make a business out of something that you enjoy and who knows where things can go from there?
I hope this has helped encourage and empower you to take on some DIY skincare. Remember, it’s all about figuring out what you want and what works for you. Do a little research and find out how fun this can be. Please leave me some feedback, questions, ideas or opinions you may have, I would love to hear from you.
